BlackBerry Application Development is day by day becoming not a luxury but a necessity. BlackBerry has now become so popular among the denizens of the corporate world that it has now become the synonym of a smart phone. The salient features of the BlackBerry that have made it popular include QWERTY keyboard, facility for email receiving and sending, Navigation key which is 5 way, unlimited entries, large display screen, unlimited fields, longer duration of battery when charged full, GPRS and other applications. This device is now being included as one of the most necessary office automation devices. Its features facilitate the user with controlling nearly all the office work from a remote location. Some of the office oriented features include calculator, alarm, diary organizer, notes, to-do lists, phone book etc. Research In Motion (RIM), a Canada based company has developed the BlackBerry.
Common WAP Applications
A typical corporate use involves attaching several WAPs to a wired network and then providing wireless access to the office LAN. Within the range of the WAPs, the wireless end user has a full network connection with the benefit of mobility. In this instance, the WAP functions as a gateway for clients to access the wired network.

What is a Dynamically Generated WAP Application?
A dynamically generated WAP application is one whose contents are created on the fly, perhaps based on data in some central database. An example might be a presentation to a client of their list of stocks in a stock tracking application. They only want to see their own list of stocks, and so the relevant information is obtained from a table of such data. The deck and cards presented to the user to show them their choices are offered in WML (or HDML, if you prefer). There's nothing special about what is sent to the client/browser: it's the same as the WML that you would create by hand in a static WML page.
Android Surpasses Apple as the Leading OS on Mobile Ad Network
Mobile advertising network Millenial Media announced today that the Android OS has surpassed Apple’s iOS as the leading smartphone OS on their network.
The news lends further support for a prediction Gartner Research made in September that the open-source Android OS would be the leading smartphone OS by 2014.
Android phones outsold iPhones for the first time in early 2010, and a report from Nielsen recently revealed that Android increased its share of new smartphone buyers between January and November while Apple’s share remained about steady and BlackBerry’s decreased.

While researching I was slightly confused about the full form of WAP and during my search over internet I found two Variations of WAP - Wireless Application Protocol & Wireless Access Protocol. (Actually there is another related term Wireless Access Point defined at the end of this post)
As for as found out wireless application protocol & wireless access protocol are the same things, If you find any differences please update by dropping comment.
Definitions of WAP on the Web:
Wireless access points are the devices which are used to connect a wireless device to a wired network, using bluetooth, wi-fi etc.

Definitions of Wireless Application/Access Protocol
Below are the various definitions of the term WAP that I found while Google-ing to define WAP-Definitions of WAP on the Web:
- Wireless Access Protocol (WAP) is an open international standard for application-layer network communications in a wireless-communication environment. Most use of WAP involves accessing the mobile web from a mobile phone or from a PDA.
wikipedia.org/WAP - A plan that outlines the procedures necessary to ensure proper treatment, storage, or disposal of hazardous waste.
www.epa.gov/waste/hazard/tsd/ldr/glossary.htm - A data transmission standard to deliver wireless markup language (WML) content.
www.ffiec.gov/ffiecinfobase/booklets/e_banking/ebanking_04_appx_b_glossary.html - Wireless Access Protocol is a technology that allows cell phones to display specially formatted Web sites on a small screen. WAP was slow to catch on because it was slow and very limited graphically. For these reasons only some Web sites are available in WAP format.
www.german-way.com/handy_voc.html - WAP enables content to be made visible on a cell phone display.
www.zwischenbericht.telekom.de/site0106/en/co/glossar/index.php - A method for presenting web pages on small devices in a way which does not tax the transfer speeds or memory of those devices. That is, these are web sites designed for mobile devices rather than standard computers.
www.codefactory.es/en/glossary.asp - Specification that allows internet content to be read by wireless devices.
www.uen.org/core/edtech/glossary.shtml - Wireless Application Protocol. An industrial standard for Internet-based data communications over mobile networks. Developed by the WAP Forum, consisting of big corporations such as Ericsson, IBM, Motorola and Nokia.
www.tele2.com/investor_relations/definitions-glossary.html - Wireless Application Protocol, web-like system for use on mobile phones. Uses a mark-up language called WML which is based on XML.
www.atsf.co.uk/mim/glossary.php - WAP is an application environment designed to bridge the gap between the mobile and internet worlds. It is a set of communication protocols for wireless devices designed to provide vendor-neutral and technology-neutral access to the internet and advanced telecommunications services.
https://secure1.telkom.co.za/ir/glossary/glossary.jsp - A base station in a wireless LAN. Access points are typically stand-alone devices that plug into an Ethernet hub or server. Like a cellular phone system, users can roam around with their mobile devices and be handed off from one access point to the other.
www.seattle.gov/informationsecurity/glossary_W.htm - Protocol concerning the use of the Internet with mobile telephones. It deals in particular, with the use of a suitable content format. This new communications protocol is part of the process of incorporating Internet applications into GSM mobile networks.
www.tempus.co.uk/glossary.asp - Wireless Application Protocol. An emerging standard to allow cellular/wireless devices to access the Internet. Interoperability to access the Internet via smart phones (WAP phones), palm devices and pocket-PC are enhanced by this standard.
www.msms.org/AM/TemplateRedirect.cfm - A leading standard for information services on wireless terminals like digital mobile phones.
www.mootywebdesign.com.au/web-design/web-design-glosary.php - An international standard establishing how mobile devices (for example, mobile phones) can access information on the Internet.

WAP: Wireless Access Point
Wireless access points are the devices which are used to connect a wireless device to a wired network, using bluetooth, wi-fi etc.
In computer networking, a wireless access point (WAP) is a device that allows wireless devices to connect to a wired network using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or related standards. The WAP usually connects to a router (via a wired network), and can relay data between the wireless devices (such as computers or printers) and wired devices on the network. Industrial grade WAPs are rugged, with a metal cover and a DIN rail mount. During operations they can tolerate a wider temperature range, high humidity and exposure to water, dust, and oil. Wireless security includes: WPA-PSK, WPA2, IEEE 802.1x/RADIUS, WDS, WEP, TKIP, and CCMP (AES) encryption. Unlike home consumer models, industrial wireless access points can also be used as a bridge, router, or a client. - as defined on wikipedia.
WAP Application blog
Welcome to the 'WAP App' blog which I've created basically to compile the informative posts about the WAP Application Development and related terms.
However if you have arrived to the WAP Applications blog I guess you are aware of the terms WAP, WAP Applications etc. Still to help you below is blurb from wikipedia to help you understand what is WAP:

Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is an open international standard. A WAP browser is a commonly used web browser for small mobile devices such as cell phones.WAP Applications refers to the applications which are developed for WAP or WAP as base of these applications. If you have a technical base and working on weblogic server, you might want to read this page on Oracle website: Using WAP with WebLogic Server - Programming WAP Applications
Before the introduction of WAP, mobile service providers had extremely limited opportunities to offer interactive data services, but needed interactivity to support Internet and Web applications such as:
- Email by mobile phone
- Tracking of stock-market prices
- Sports results
- News headlines new
- Music downloads
